Hertfordshire Apprenticeship Programmes

The Hertfordshire Apprenticeship Programme (HAP) has been set up to utilise the apprenticeship levy to best effect across the organisation. Our vision for the levy is to maximise it to the benefit of skills and learning throughout the workforce and County; to address existing skill shortages and to be bold in the opportunities the levy brings.

Opportunities for apprenticeship qualifications will be available for newly recruited apprentices and existing employees. A wide range of apprenticeship training is offered, including; Engineering, Business Administration and Health & Social Care.

What is an Apprenticeship Programme?

An apprenticeship programme is a fixed term contract which provides experience in the workplace with dedicated support and an opportunity to gain qualifications, up to a postgraduate degree, whilst receiving a salary.

Becoming an apprentice with us will give you the opportunity to;

  • Earn while you Learn;
  • Minimum starting salary of £15,000 per annum or above;
  • Work within a variety of roles across HCC in a range of services;
  • Join the Local Government Pension Scheme,
  • Gain generous holiday package
  • Gain access to our award winning Herts Rewards package.

Who is an Apprenticeship for?

Our Apprenticeship Programmes are available for a variety of individuals, from those who have limited or no work experience/qualifications in the specific field to those wanting a career change or to develop further. The changes to apprenticeships mean that the opportunities are now open to all ages and the apprenticeship levy allows us to offer quality training and qualifications to existing staff as well as new apprentices.

How long is the Apprenticeship Programme?

The level and complexity of the apprenticeship determines the duration of the apprenticeship programme. For example, a Level 2 Apprenticeship in Business Administration would take approximately one year whereas a Level 4 in Engineering would take two years. The Apprenticeship programme will always be of sufficient length to ensure that workplace learning and job experience is appropriate to prepare apprentices for the role.

Continued Development

Once you have finished the apprenticeship programme or if you would like to explore further opportunities with us, please take a look at the current vacancies that we have to offer as apprenticeship qualifications, may be available as part of your continuous professional development.

If you have any questions about the Hertfordshire Apprenticeship Programme or Apprenticeship Qualifications, please email: HAP@hertfordshire.gov.uk.

Apprenticeship Levy

As well as changes to how apprenticeships are funded, there is a renewed effort to promote apprenticeships as work based qualifications, equivalent to an NVQ level 2 - 7, which is up to postgraduate degree level, all whilst receiving a salary. They provide valuable on the job experience and let apprentices build workplace relationships which they would not have access to in other types of training or education.

Apprenticeships are not just for young people, they are now available to anyone of any age or background who are looking to learn new skills or want a career change. Apprenticeship qualifications will also provide opportunities for existing staff to continue their professional development without changing their contract or salary.

Rhys Hughes

Engineering Apprentice

“This apprenticeship is a brilliant way for me to take full advantage of what HCC has to offer in way of training and progression towards becoming a qualified civil engineer.

I am working with a brilliant team who are taking me up the ladder by giving me real life work which has the engineering principles applied to it. From an apprenticeship you learn a lot, not just about the job but also about yourself.”

Matt Hartfield

ICT Security Apprentice

"Doing an apprenticeship at HCC provided me with a great opportunity to gain knowledge in different fields within IT.

This experience in the workplace, as well as the qualification aspect of my apprenticeship, has set me up for future roles within the IT world wherever I go."
