Equality and diversity is in everything we do

Commitment to equality

We are one of only seven county councils in the UK to be awarded Level 3 Disability Confident Confident (Leader status) – the highest accreditation within the Government’s Disability Confident scheme.

In 2024, we received The Employers Network for Inclusion and Equality (ENEI) Gold Award, which recognises our unwavering commitment to creating a diverse, inclusive, and equitable workplace for all employees.

What does being Disability Confident mean?

We strive to incorporate equality and diversity into everything, so that it is an integral part of our business, and not just an ‘add on’.

We recognise that interviews may be a challenging experience for some and that candidates who have declared a disability may have individual, special requirements. We'll make reasonable adjustments in order to accommodate individual needs of the candidates.

Access to work

Access to Work Scheme provides assessments of an individual’s needs and makes recommendations for equipment, support and adjustments that would benefit the individual within the workplace. Reasonable adjustments can be made once employed with us to make work as easy as possible for you.

Celebrating Diversity

Employees with disabilities are encouraged to be confident about demonstrating their skills and abilities at the council. We employ 8,000 staff, and our working practices make us a government-recognised ‘Disability Confident’ employer.

Our Staff Network Groups play a vital role in fostering connection, support, and shared understanding across different backgrounds, beliefs, and lived experiences. Open to everyone, they are a safe space for colleagues to connect, share, and champion diversity and inclusion within our organisation.
