Find your role

  • Read the job ad carefully to ensure you meet the essential criteria.
  • Match your skills and experience to the role's requirements.
  • Apply early, as high demand may lead to early closure.
  • Check the interview date in the ad and ensure availability, as rescheduling may not be possible.

Tailor your CV and covering statement

  • Update your CV with your current or most recent employment.
  • Highlight your skills, knowledge, and experience relevant to the job role in your CV.
  • Showcase how you meet both essential and desirable criteria in your application.
  • Clearly outline your relevant experience and provide examples.
  • Ensure your CV demonstrates your qualifications before submitting, as the hiring manager will review it against the job criteria.

Hiring manager shortlisting

After the advertisement deadline, the shortlisting panel will review your application against the job criteria.

We'll contact you with the outcome via email (check your junk folder). If there are many applications, it may take longer to contact you, but we will always let you know.

If you are unsuccessful, we cannot provide feedback at the shortlisting stage.

Interview

If you advance to the next stage, you'll receive an email with a link to select your interview timeslot on a first-come, first-served basis. We'll inform you about the interview location (virtual or in person), the interview panel, and any additional aspects like tests.

To prepare for your interview:

  • Review the job advertisement (included in your interview invite).
  • Research Hertfordshire County Council and the specific service.

Our interviews are competency-based. You can find helpful guides on Reed and Indeed websites. If the role involves working with vulnerable children, a personal interview may be required, and you'll be informed beforehand.

After the interview - decision

We'll be in touch once all the interviews have been completed and we've reached a decision.

If you've been successful - congratulations! We will send you an email with your conditional offer. We will then carry out compliance checks, during which you will have a dedicated point of contact to support you throughout the process.
Have a read through our Employee Handbook and terms and conditions.
